Nominations Open for New Book to Highlight Top Players in Los Angeles’ Startup Scene

Entrepreneurs, investors, colleges, accelerators, coworking spaces and experts can now be nominated to be featured in Startup Guide Los Angeles, the first-ever entrepreneurial handbook dedicated to Los Angeles’ startup scene. Based on traditional guidebooks that can be carried around everywhere, Startup Guide books help entrepreneurs navigate different startup hubs across the globe and are now in 20 different cities across the U.S., Europe, and the Middle East, including London, New York, Berlin, Tel Aviv, and Stockholm.

To ensure an accurate and trustworthy guide, the book is co-created with the local startup community. From Dec. 6 – 18, 2018, anyone in the community can contribute by nominating candidates they’d like to see in the book here.

After the nominations period, the local advisory board – consisting of key players in the local startup community – votes for the final selection so there is a balanced representation of industries and startup stories in the book.

Founded in 2014 by Sissel Hansen, Startup Guide is a creative content and publishing company that produces guidebooks and tools to help people turn their startup ideas into a reality. The idea behind the Startup Guide books originally came to Hansen when she moved from Copenhagen to Berlin to start a business and discovered how difficult it was to find useful information and local advice about the process. Despite being rejected by multiple investors, she bootstrapped the project and launched the first Startup Guide book in Berlin in 2014 – and it sold out in less than 48 hours.

For Startup Guide Los Angeles, Startup Guide has partnered with The L.A. Coalition for the Economy & Jobs, who will be the main project facilitator and supporter, while the main sponsor for the project is SAP Next-Gen, a global, purpose-driven innovation university, and community.

It seems like only a few years ago when the idea of actual virtual reality was the stuff of science fiction movies. Of course, there were some niche products here and there, but VR tech was generally considered high tech and prohibitively expensive.

Expert projections for 2019 have the VR market for hardware and software growing to $12.1 billion, and that’s double from last year’s market. It’s estimated that its growth can reach up to $40 billion.

Of course, it may seem like this isn’t terribly relevant news for your business if you’re not participating directly in the VR/AR market. Yet even then, this technology can still help your business as it can be used for your marketing.

Budget Considerations

You may be doubtful about the realistic use of VR marketing due to your wariness about the costs. But just like for the PC, the mobile phone, and the LED TVs, prices have dropped for the hardware. It not as expensive as it was when the first VT products came out.

Because of the comparative cheapness of the hardware, consumer interest in these items has increased. So now you can develop a VR/AR app that’s related to the products and services you offer, and you’ll have plenty of consumers to pitch to.

Many notable business organizations have made use of this technology to promote their brand and their business. The most famous examples include:

VR stories. It’s well known that even iconic print brands like the New York Times have found it difficult to maintain their status in the digital age. Subscriptions to actual newspapers have alarmingly dropped and their readerships have serious fallen. So, of course, the NY Times has adapted to the new reality by having online editions.

Now they have an app that lets you use the Samsung Gear VR or the Daydream View to experience 360-degree reality. Now you don’t have to read about Iraqi forces fighting against ISIS, or even watch news reports on TV. Instead, you can use the VR app so that it seems like you’re alongside the Iraqi troops.

VR music videos. Artists have long used music videos to promote their singles and albums. But Bjork has been just as experimental with here videos as she is with her music. She has enabled VR users to be transported into her music videos, and this has certainly boosted her album sales.

Trying things out. What would a piece of furniture actually look like when it’s in your living room? Now you don’t have to imagine thanks to the Ikea AR app, which lets you to actually see for yourself. The app lets you pick among the Ikea products and then you can use your smartphone camera to point at the space where you want to place the furniture.

The possibilities are almost endless, and it’s a new horizon for marketing. Now you’re not limited by text, images, or even videos. With VR/AR, marketing is now a much different reality.

You Don’t Need Millions in Funding to Launch a Startup

When you’re launching a new startup, you may think that you need millions in funding to make sure that you get your new business launched properly. After all, the news reports are filled with numerous accounts of new companies receiving millions in seed money.

Yet the truth is that you don’t need millions, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, to get your new business off the ground. Spanx generates $400 million in revenue every year, yet it started as a $5,000 investment. Some companies became successful even without any venture capital funding.

So how do you succeed when you have a modest startup fund, to begin with? Here are 3 ways that can help you cope:

1. Get Paid Up Front and Deliver Services Later

You can burn through much of your initial capital if you tend to produce and deliver products and services first before you get paid. It’s much more efficient for your business if you can reverse this process and get paid first before you deliver.

This works very well with event-based services. You can promise to hold a grand party, a new instructional class, or a gaming event only after participants reserve and pay for tickets beforehand. You then get your money right away without delay.

2. Create an Incentivized Sales Force

Marketing can be a very expensive proposition for your brand, and there’s always a risk of spending too much on marketing without getting any revenue in return. But you can go online and offer incentives to potential sellers so that you have others that do the marketing for you. All you need to do is to offer a cut of the revenues.

This is the foundation of affiliate marketing. Your affiliate marketers build websites that convince people to go to your website and buy what you have to offer. Once the sale is completed, your affiliate marketer earns a percentage of the purchase price. This means you get the money first so that you have the capital to pay for your affiliate marketers.

3. Sales First, Branding Comes Later
