The phrase “hamburger joint” may not exactly get a foodie in a frenzy, but don’t knock Eureka! until you’ve tried it. This family-run restaurant may have already expanded to nine locations in less than a decade from when its first diner opened, but it has so much promise that it’s totally worth a shot. If you’re a big fan of handmade burgers, you should definitely not miss this place as they serve freshly-baked bread with their all natural, antibiotic and hormone-free beef burgers guaranteeing quality ingredients at the very least. Their other menu items are all guaranteed to be made from scratch as well – even most of their drinks – so if you’re in the mood for real food prepared by experts, this place is a great place to visit.

Being an upscale bar, you can also expect marvelous drinks at the Eureka! that will go well with your food. They offer a wide range of drinks. You can choose from a nice selection of craft beers, different kinds of bourbon and whiskey, as well as a full bar for a wide range of cocktail options.

  1. Eureka! American Cheeseburger – American Swiss, grilled red onion, butter lettuce, pickles, tomato, special sauce
  2. Bone Marrow Burger – Limited availability of bone marrow porcini butter, charbroiled onion, mustard aioli, roasted Roma tomato
  3. Bison Burger – Bacon-infused jalapeño jam, charbroiled tri-color peppers, grilled red onion, smoked mozzarella
  4. Jalapeño Egg Burger – Fried egg, cheddar, bacon, chipotle sauce, pickled jalapeños
  5. Fresno Fig Burger – Fig marmalade, melted goat cheese, bacon, tomato, red onion, arugula, spicy porter mustard

Guisados, Home of The Braised Beef Tacos

There may be tons of taquerias in LA, but if there is one place that you shouldn’t miss, it has to be Guisados. This family-run joint is basically a neighborhood staple in Boyle Heights. The family who runs the place also owns the building and the tortilleria next door is owned by a family member. This is why it shouldn’t be surprising that the diner’s vision is to offer the very same food as what Mama made at home.

From a single, small operation in 2010, Guisados has grown to a 5-location operation over the years with its food still being made in Boyle Heights and delivered fresh to the other stores daily. Don’t expect anything fancy from this eatery, though. Like many well-loved taquerias all over the state, it’s a collection of no-frills takeout joints. You can expect very affordable bites that offer simple recipes that allow the fillings to shine and the flavor to really fill you up, however. There are also a number of vegetarian options, so if you or someone you know can’t eat meat for moral reasons, Guisados can still be a great place to head to.

Very clean and friendly spot.  Pay parking is just next door for $8.


What to order:

  1. Mole Poblano – Shredded chicken breast in a nutty Poblano style Mole. Served with sour cream, queso fresco, red onion and dried chile.
  2. Chuleta en Chile Verde – Diced pork chop in a chile verde. Served atop black beans with chile arbol, green serrano chile and sour cream.
  3. Hongos con Cilantro – Mushrooms cooked with cilantro and onions. Served with green serrano chile and queso fresco.
  4. Camarones – Fajita-style shrimp, onions and bell peppers served with a mild chipotle sour cream.
  5. Cochinita Pibil – Shredded pork cooked in a sweet, red achiote spice atop black beans. Served with Yucatan compliments, Pickled red onions and habanero chile. Taco defaults at a 3 on scale of 1-10. Proceed with caution

Happiness in a Rice Bowl at Chego

If you’ve been paying close attention to restaurateurs and innovators in the restaurant industry of LA, you’ll recognize the name Roy Choi. Hailed as a genius by lots of foodies, he has quite a few amazing restaurants in his helm. Chego is a great manifestation of Choi’s passions and capacity as a cook and talent. Being an Asian fusion rice bowl eatery, it offers a plethora of flavors in each serving and you have to be ready for every savory bite.

Initially located in a strip mall before becoming one of those hip food truck eateries and then a popular tiny diner in Chinatown, Chego has definitely been building its following over the years. It won’t delude you that it’s a fancy eatery as it is located in a faded walking mall with sticky picnic tables for seating. However, after grabbing a bite here, you’re sure to come back for more, even if you don’t really eat rice. The combination of flavors is too unique to find elsewhere, so if you’re one to crave for specific dishes that you’ve enjoyed, prepare for another trip to Chinatown shortly after your initial visit to Chego.
